Ford recalls 518,000 vehicles to avoid possible fires under hoods

Washington, Nov 24 (Prensa Latina) As the Ford family’s Detroit Lions prepared to play their annual Thanksgiving Day game at Ford Field, the Ford Motor Company announced a recall of 518,993 Ford Bronco Sports and Ford Escapes in the United States.

The recalled Bronco Sports are from 2021, 2022 and 2023. The recalled Escapes are from the same years but also 2020. There’s a spot on the Ford website as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site where you can enter your vehicle identification number to double check if your vehicle is involved in any recalls.

The fuel injector might crack while the engine is running. Enough fuel or fuel vapors near hot surfaces and you’ve got a fire under the hood. “If your SUV has a cracked fuel injector, a strong smell of gasoline is one of the first signs,” Ford said.

Ford hasn’t issued any stop driving or park outside recommendations, as other car companies have had to do with other recalls having to do with fire threats. Obviously, if your SUV starts to smoke or, Ford says, if you smell gas, stop driving it. Otherwise, just get it to a Ford dealership as soon as possible for the above inspection.

At the dealership, the engine control software will be updated so the driver can get a dashboard message about a cracked fuel injector. Also, the update will cause an engine power reduction if a fuel rail pressure drop is detected. This should allow the driver to wheel the SUV to someplace where the vehicle can be serviced.

Also, the dealership’s service team will “check for excessive fuel odor near the top of the engine” as well as “install a tube that drains fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces.”
