Investigation into causes of meningitis in Durango, Mexico ongoing

meningitis-Small-300x225
Mexico City, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The Undersecretary of Public Health of Mexico, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, reported that Epidemiology continues to investigate the causes of meningitis in the state of Durango.

He confirmed 61 cases and 12 deaths as of November 24th, and that the federal health authority is coordinating actions with the sections of Medical Care, Research, Laboratory Diagnosis, Escalation of Hospital Capacity, and Public Health in Acapulco, Guerrero.

The official noted that the investigation to determine the causes of meningitis will continue as long as necessary while providing comprehensive medical care to patients.

During a National Public Health Meeting in Acapulco, Lopez-Gatell clarified that the disease did not spread from person to person, but rather via a direct infection in the central nervous system through anesthetic procedures.

He stated that the investigation is focused on determining at what point in the process the contamination occurred and that it would be speculative to attribute the cases to the bottles, either manufactured or stored, or to the use of anesthetic in patients.

Lopez-Gatell reported that medical follow-up is being carried out by one of the four laboratories involved on people who have received the anesthetic procedure since March to monitor their health status.

“Most do not present any symptoms, but we are going to give them medical and laboratory surveillance.” He explained that when the first case of meningitis became known, the Ministry of Health responded immediately with the presence of a group of epidemiology experts to carry out the investigations.
