UNESCO will support Chile after fire in Rapa Nui national park

Paris, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) UNESCO on Saturday announced a donation of almost 100,000 dollars to assess the damages caused in early October by a fire in the Chilean national park Rapa Nui (Easter Island), declared a World Heritage Site.

In a statement, this organization devoted to education, science and culture specified that the aid will be materialized through its Heritage Emergency Fund, thanks to the generosity of its donors.

The support plan for Chile will include the development of lines of work that will seek to reduce the impact of the fire, which devastated some 100 hectares, and prevent future catastrophes, it said.

According to UNESCO, activities on the ground will focus on support with expert advice to the Ma’u Henua indigenous community, which manages the site.

The office of this UN organization in Chile will be in charge of this project, which will be implemented between December, 2022, and November 2023.

The first phase will include a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the fire, while the second one will determine emergency preparedness and response measures and protocols for better protection and promotion of World Heritage in Rapa Nui, a site that was included in the UNESCO List in 1995.
