Cuba and Uruguay share 15 years of medical cooperation

Montevideo, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and Uruguay share 15 years of medical cooperation, with the presence here of an ophthalmologic brigade from the island.

The health team provides services at the ‘José Martí’ Eye Hospital in Montevideo, after the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on November 27, 2007.

That decision was an initiative of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who promoted the Miracle Mission through which millions of Latin Americans and Caribbeans recovered their sight.

Fifteen years later, the team of Caribbean specialists is made up of ophthalmologists, surgeons, clinicians, specialists in general comprehensive medicine, nursing and laboratory graduates, an electromedical engineer and supporting staff.

The head of the Cuban mission, Dr. Evelyn Almira, told Prensa Latina that they work closely with Uruguayan staffs and health authorities of the Eye Hospital. She pointed out that more than 100,000 surgeries have been performed, in addition to other figures on consultations and in field research.

The 15th anniversary of this cooperation will be celebrated on December 2, in occasion of the Latin American Medicine Day, at the Paraninfo of the University of the Republic (Udelar).
