Pegasus spyware reappears in El Salvador

San Salvador, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) Journalists of El Faro sued NSO Group, the Israeli manufacturer of the spy software Pegasus, which reappears in El Salvador, after more than a year of waiting to find out who was watching them.

The lawsuit, which did not take place in Salvadoran territory, was filed before a US federal court, for alleged violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), for NSO Group to reveal the identity of the client who was behind the undercover work.

This case went around several regions of the world during 2021. It was used in state spying against Pakistan, the assassination of Arab-Saudi dissident Jamal Kashoggi, in actions against journalists and officials in Mexico, including governors and prime ministers of several countries.

Pegasus is capable of reading text messages, tracking calls, collecting passwords, tracking phone location and obtaining information from apps.

The phones of 22 of El Faro’s members were spied on between June 2020 and November 2021, according to the publication.

Carlos Dada, director and founder of El Faro, and whose phone was tapped for 167 days, describes this lawsuit ‘as an attempt to defend our rights,’ the publication said.

Unfortunately we have had to look for a court in another country, because there is no possibility that in El Salvador we can obtain justice, or even official information about how and which government agency has spied on us and has in its possession all the contents of our phones,’ Dada explained.
