According to officials, allied labor unions of Seoul Metro, accounting for some 13,000 workers, or 80 percent of the firm’s workforce, went on strike Wednesday, one day after negotiations failed with the company.

The two sides resumed talks on Wednesday evening and finally reached an agreement shortly after midnight, the Seoul Government announced.

The unions started the strike in protest against Seoul Metro’s plan to downsize its labor force by more than 1,500 employees by 2026.

The strike marks the first of its kind in six years, following a general strike that tool place in September 2016.
