French railroad controllers go on strike for better work conditions

Francia huelga
Paris, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) France's state-owned railway company (SNFC) canceled 60 percent of long-distance trains for this weekend due to the controllers' strike in demand of better work conditions.

About 10,000 controllers are called to the strike, which will last in principle until Sunday, and will affect high-speed (TGV) and intercity trains, 60 percent of which were canceled.

According to the company, there will be a “gradual resumption” on Monday, with three out of four trains on all TGV routes.

The Atlantic axis will be the most affected, with only 25 percent of connections. As a result, between 80 and 90 percent of the railway controllers in the area decided to support the strike.

Union sources denounced the work conditions that oblige them to “work three weekends a month and not to sleep at home more than ten nights a month,” in addition to adjusting several bonuses to base salary, to be taken into account when determining retirement.

The railroad union filed a strike notice for Christmas and New Year’s weekends to put pressure on the SNCF after having failed to achieve any concrete progress in the two meetings held with the management.
