Eighth CARICOM-CUBA Summit opens in Barbados

Eighth CARICOM-CUBA Summit opens in Barbados

Bridgetown, Dec 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Tuesday inaugurated here the 8th CARICOM-Cuba Summit, which is celebrating 50 years of relations between the first four independent English-speaking Caribbean countries and Cuba.

The establishment of diplomatic relations with Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago on December 8, 1972, was a transcendental development for regional integration, thus ending the attempts at diplomatic isolation imposed by the United States.

In the opinion of experts, it also showed the courage and dignity of those countries, something that made it possible to regularize relations with all its members on equal terms.

President Diaz-Canel arrived in Barbados on Monday after paying a visit to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Cuban delegation is made up of Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, as well as Ministers Rodrigo Malmierca (Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment), Jose Angel Portal (Public Health), Elba Rosa Perez (Science, Technology, and Environment), and the president of the BioCubaFarma business group, Eduardo Martinez, among other officials. jg/aph/mgt/alb
