Havana, Dec 9 (Prensa Latina) The British Council on Friday celebrated the 25th anniversary of its relations in Cuba, aimed at teaching English as second language in the country's schools.

In a press release, the organization’s Director in Cuba Minerva Rodriguez recalled that at the beginning of the organization’s efforts in Cuba focused only on science, but now it goes beyond that. However, nowadays it goes beyond teacher training and extends to areas including support for young talents and musical and audiovisual projects.

She pointed out that the entity has strong working relations with the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, as well as with universities nationwide, in order to promote skills training for teachers.

Rodriguez stated that the Covid-19 pandemic made it necessary to use virtual platforms and the adaptation of contents for teacher training.

In the cultural field, she emphasized collaboration with the Cuban radio station Radio Taino in a radio program that introduces young British musicians to the nation’s audience.

Executive Director of the British Council Scott McDonald, on the other hand, said he felt very proud of the organization´s work has done in Cuba.

“Our main tools, in hundred of countries we collaborate with, are English language teaching, education, art and culture,” he said.

Macdonald explained the goal in Cuba is to apply the learning experiences of other countries, as well as to share Cuba’s ideas with the world.
