More than 183,000 Indians renounced their citizenship in 2022

New Delhi, Dec 14 (Prensa Latina) More than 183,000 Indians renounced their citizenship between January and October this year, an increase of nearly 20,000 cases compared to 2021, the government reported in Parliament.

Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Vellamvelly Muraleedharan pointed out in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Legislature) that since 2014 more than 1,243,000 Indians have renounced their citizenship, the Scroll website reported.

The law does not allow Indians to have dual citizenship and according to the Passport Act if people acquire another country’s citizenship they have to hand over their Indian passport at the consular offices.

According to government data, 78,284 people acquired US citizenship in 2021, followed by 23,533 who obtained it from Australia and 21,597 from Canada.

Muraleedharan also noted that 60 individuals from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan obtained Indian citizenship this year.
