The event was held in Luanda from December 6 to 9. Angolan President João Lourenço assumed the organization’s presidency for a three-year term.
Common positions were included in the Summit’s statement, which condemned the use of unilateral and coercive measures against developing countries.
Particularly, the forum denounced the existence of illegal sanctions with a view to preventing some nations from exercising the right to determine their political, economic, and social system.
Likewise, it rejected the increasing implementation of extraterritorial laws that are against international standards.
As a concrete example, it mentioned the Helms-Burton Law in Cuba’s case, since it is a piece of legislation that codes the United States’ economic, financial and commercial blockade against the Caribbean island.
The text says that the OAPS members are “politically and genuinely committed” to development and cooperation, with the objective of promoting resilient societies and sustainable economies.
The elimination of poverty in all forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, continues to be the main challenge and necessary condition for development, the presidents recognized.
During the summit in Luanda, the delegations also agreed on the urgent need to mobilize more financial resources, technical means, and scientific capacity for projects in order to alleviate the consequences of climate change, especially in small island States.
Lourenço said that mitigating the effects of climate change, good governance, transparency and the appreciation of the domestic production of each organization member will be the main working issues in Angola at the head of the organization.
Participation in the Summit, he said, shows an interest in consolidating OAPS as a political-diplomatic platform which is essential for bringing the peoples and cultures together, and as an major stockholders in the so-called Glocal South, aimed at building a world of peace, understanding and harmony.
