Lionel Messi, on the other hand, reached 21 votes and moved up in the last week to displace Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos.

Regarding women´s category, Venezuelan triple jumper Yulimar Rojas was most-voted, who won indoor/outdoor gold medal this season, reaching up 32 votes.

As expected, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 celebration had great influence on the survey, not only because of results, but also in the late reception of votes, which this time came from 56 press media from 17 countries such as Lebanon and China.

Regarding Messi, the World Cup has been his third trophy in the survey, as he also won in 2011 and 2014; as well as Rojas, who won it in 2017 and 2019.

Historical candidates in these categories continue to be Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, Colombian triple jumper Catherine Ibargüen and Brazilian men’s soccer team, with six, five and nine wins, respectively.
