President of Ecuador claims that 370 tons of drugs have been seized

Quito, Dec 23 (Prensa Latina) The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, said that in 18 months in office, his government has seized 370 tons of drugs in the midst of the campaign he is promoting against drug trafficking and criminal gangs.

In an interview broadcasted on local television on Thursday night, the president stated that in this way they avoid problems for Ecuadorians and the destination countries for the drugs, such as the United States.

“That is why I told US President Joe Biden that we must share the bill, because we are also working for them,” said the President, referring to the results of his visit to Washington this week.

“The logistical support of the United States will enable us to be more effective in this regard,” said Lasso, who mentioned as an example the seizure of one and a half tons of drugs in a submersible vessel this week.

He also referred to the Strategic Association Law with Ecuador, recently approved by the US Congress, which is considered an attack on national sovereignty, but according to him, it will contribute to fight drug trafficking and corruption, as well as bringing commercial advantages.

Ecuador is experiencing an escalation of insecurity that has caused, this year, an increase on intentional deaths at a rate of more than 20 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to the Government, violence is caused through disputes between criminal gangs over control and drug trafficking, a problem for which Ecuador demands international support.

Along these lines, Lasso assured that he already has the support of the United States and Colombia, and announced that the defense ministers of Ecuador, Luis Lara, and Colombia, Ivan Velasquez, will meet on December 28th to discuss a security plan for the common border.
