Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet decided to meet the food subsidy expenditure under the National Food Security Act and other welfare schemes.
Goyal told the media that beneficiaries of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (poorest of the poor) plan will receive 35 kilograms of cereals per family while five kilograms per person will go to priority households free for over a year.
The Antyodaya Anna Yojana is a public distribution program that was launched in India in 2000 with the main objective of abolishing hunger in the country and ensuring food security for the population.
Goyal also noted that during the Covid-19 pandemic, cereals were distributed free in the country for 28 months under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana program.
