Hanoi, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) The transcendental victory achieved half a century ago by the armed forces and the people of Vietnam, in the campaign 'Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu in the Air' was hailed in this capital on Monday.

Over the years, this victory has become a shining symbol of the will, intelligence, creativity and pride of the Vietnamese people and the Vietnamese Army and is one of the glorious achievements in the history of struggle against foreign invaders in the Ho Chi Minh era, Dinh Tien Dung stressed.

Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (VCP) Hanoi Committee, Dinh Tien spoke Monday at a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of this event (1972-2022), organized by municipal authorities and the Ministry of Defense.

At the ceremony, Hero of the People’s Armed Forces and one of the veterans participating in the historic campaign, Lieutenant General Pham Tuan, emphasized that over the past 50 years the spirit of this victory has resounded, showing the heroic feat of Vietnam’s will and bravery under the leadership of the VCP.

The so-called “Operation Linebacker II,” which was launched on December 18, 1972 and lasted for 12 days and nights, was aimed at obtaining an overwhelming military victory and thus turning the situation at the peace negotiating table in Paris in favor of the United States.

To carry out its goals, the White House ordered the mobilization of 193 B-52 bombers, equivalent to almost half of those it possessed; 48 F-111As; 999 fighters of all types deployed in Thailand, South Vietnam and on six aircraft carriers stationed in the East Sea.

The victory achieved in the heroic ‘Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the Air’ campaign forced the White House to sign the Paris Agreement on January 27, 1973, which put an end to the war and forced the USA to withdraw all its invading troops from Vietnam.
