Panama expects to review trade agreement with the U.S.

Panama expects to review trade agreement with the U.S.

Panama City, Dec 27 (Prensa Latina) Panama's Foreign Minister, Janaina Tewaney, affirmed that her government is accelerating negotiations to review the Trade Promotion Treaty (TPC) signed with the United States in 2007 but which affects national producers.

In a meeting with foreign correspondents and in response to a question from Prensa Latina, the diplomat revealed this was one of the points discussed during her recent visit to the northern country, in which she was accompanied by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Federico Alfaro.

Minister Alfaro talked with his counterpart, Gina Raimondo, in which they discussed the trade agenda and the strengthening of the economy, as well as environmental, investment and technology issues, he explained.

We will always prioritize the defense of the agricultural sector and our national producers, knowing that some items are sensitive in this agreement, such as pork, and it is an issue to which the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, has dedicated a lot of time and effort, he added.

To define the strategy to follow in the renegotiation of the TPC with the United States, he said, is also working as a team with the ministries of Government and Agricultural Development, respectively. Panama and the United States signed the TPA on June 28, 2007.
