CARICOM sends election observation mission to Antigua and Barbuda

Saint John, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) A CARICOM election observation mission will arrive in Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday to examine the presidential elections scheduled for January 18, Caribbean News Now reported.

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer of the Elections and Boundaries Department of Belize, is heading the CARICOM mission in response to the invitation extended by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda.

With experience in these issues, Tamai has previously served as Chief of Mission for general elections held in Jamaica in 2016, the Bahamas in 2017, and Dominica in 2019. She was also a Deputy Chief of Mission for elections in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago in 2015.

According to the source, the CARICOM Election Observation Mission proposes to meet with leaders of political parties, the electoral officials, and other stakeholders of Antigua and Barbuda and will monitor the voting process, including the opening of the poll, the casting of votes, the closing of the poll, and the counting of ballots.

In late December, Prime Minister Gaston Browne called to guarantee the return of the Labor Party (ABLP) to power.

The last general elections were held on March 21, 2018, and Browne’s ABLP won 15 of 17 seats.

The CARICOM observation team will arrive in Antigua and Barbuda between January 11 and 15 and depart from the nation on January 20.
