New Israeli chief of staff takes office amid dispute with government

Tel Aviv, Jan 16 (Prensa Latina) General Herzi Halevi took over as chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) replacing Aviv Kochavi, amid the Army's dissatisfaction over decisions taken by the far-right government.

The transfer was made during a ceremony in which Halevi was promoted to lieutenant general, the highest rank in the IDF.

Kochavi handed over the command after four years in office and in the midst of deep differences with the Executive of Benjamin Netanyahu, who returned to power just a few weeks ago with a conservative agenda.

The Army rejected the powers granted to ultranationalist ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, who were given responsibilities in various military aspects outside the chain of command.

According to the source, before leaving office, Kohavi communicated this position to Netanyahu and Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant.

Kohavi later stated during an interview that the handing over of responsibilities related to the Armed Forces to any minister other than Defense is an unacceptable violation of the chain of command.

As part of the ruling coalition’s power-sharing deals, Ben Gvir was placed at the helm of the Ministry of National Security, with expanded powers to include control of border police, hitherto controlled by Defense.

After the recent electoral victory of the conservative alliance, Smotrich demanded the Ministry of Defense, but in the midst of a wave of international criticism, Netantyahu did not dare to take the step, although he did transfer control over the West Bank to him.
