Investigation into massacre in Bolivia welcomed

La Paz, Jan 18 (Prensa Latina) Relatives of the victims of the Senkata massacre, in El Alto, Bolivia, welcomed the extension of the criminal proceedings against former president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) for genocide and serious injuries.

“The Public Ministry has informed the First Precautionary Judge of the city of El Alto of the extension of the criminal process, against Jeanine Áñez,for genocide crimes, homicide and serious injuries (…) She will be tried for the Senkata Massacre”, said the Minister of Justice, Iván Lima.

The decision was informed by prosecutors Walter Lora, Iván Cernadas and Favio Maldonado to the First Criminal Court of Instruction of the city’s department of La Paz, in the context of the process followed ex officio against Luis Fernando Valverde and others.

The events took place in the Senkata area during the transit of a fuel convoy in November 2019. According to the preliminary investigation, Valverde ordered the movement of the convoy from the Senkata plant on November 19, 2019.

The report indicates that joint forces of the Police and the Armed Forces attacked the civilian population, “with a balance of 31 people injured with firearm projectiles, injuries caused by perforating contusion weapons; as well as 10 persons who died due to the impact of firearm projectiles”.

The main basis of the accusation against Áñez is the emission of Supreme Decree 4078 of November 14th, 2019, known as “of death”, which exempted from criminal liability those involved in the repression of those who demanded the establishment of democracy.

The total number of murdered in Senkata and Sacaba, in Cochabamba, was 38.

Áñez is accused of the crimes in the Coup d’état I file for the crimes of “genocide, homicide and serious injuries, provided for and punished by articles 138, 251 and 271 of the Bolivian Penal Code”.
