Hearing against former guerrillas begins in El Salvador

San Salvador, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) The hearing against seven former guerrillas, of the last war in this country, starts in San Salvador on Thursday on charges of murder, illegal negotiations, and deprivation of freedom.

On January 11, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) ordered the arrest of six former members of the National Resistance for their alleged participation in the murder of María Inés Alvarenga on August 22, 1989, while the other accused resides in the United States.

Dennis Muñoz, the lawyer of the detainees, said that the accusation made by the Attorney General’s Office is contradictory, lacks support, and does not have sufficient elements for a provisional arrest.

Muñoz asserts that the Prosecutor’s Office lacks evidence to incriminate those arrested for a crime with no legal basis as there is no autopsy where the issue of the murders can be legally accredited nor peripheral evidence that indicates the existence of death.

The Prosecutor’s Office alleges that the detainees deprived the woman of her freedom by linking her to the Armed Forces, torturing her for 15 days, and killing her in a guerrilla camp.

This Thursday, members of the Popular Resistance and Rebellion Bloc will protest in front of the Isidro Menéndez Judicial Center in San Salvador, demanding the release of the detainees.
