Russian scientists create low-temperature casting method

Moscow, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) Scientists from the Tomsk Russian State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering reported on a new method to produce durable concrete in the Arctic and the Far North cold conditions.

According to the institution, the new system for manufacturing concrete will be used in the construction of industrial and civil facilities, roads and engineering structures in extreme conditions in the said regions.

The researchers initially conducted several experiments to study heat and mass transfer gradients as a function of environmental factors, and demonstrated that water moves toward a lower temperature during the concrete casting process.

In order to change this logical process, they created a wooden formwork into which concrete and cement control samples are cast. One wall of the wooden formwork is heated to over 60 degrees Celsius, while the opposite wall is cooled to minus 50 degrees.

Thanks to the procedure, the concrete does not freeze, it gains strength and other operational characteristics, making it feasible to use it outdoors with temperatures down to minus 30 degrees.
