A statement by PIT-CNT Executive Secretariat demands respect for the self-determination of the Peruvian people and to ‘decide their own forms of government, in accordance with the principle of equity and to resolve their differences without any kind of foreign intervention’.
Democratically-elected president Pedro Castillo was the target of a right-wing legislative coup in December, and an interim government was imposed by Congress.
The statement rejected what it described as opportunist sectors serving ‘the interests of US imperialism and its allied local bourgeoisie, which deepen dependence on the United States and control over water, food and energy resources of the continent.
The PIT-CNT expressed its solidarity with the workers of Peru ‘who suffer most from government repression’, and declared itself in defence of democracy and against state terrorism in that country.
