The call is in compliance with one of the steps foreseen in the Electoral Law in force in Cuba, which grants these local government bodies the power to elect the candidates for deputies based on the proposals made by the country’s mass organizations, according to a report by the Cuban News Agency.
The National Assembly of People’s Power (parliament) will be integrated by more than 400 parliamentarians distributed according to territorial representation and all social sectors of the country, of which, up to 50% are delegates from the constituency at grassroots level.
During the month of January, Cuban mass organizations held meetings in which more than 19 thousand pre-candidates for deputies were selected, proposals which were then analyzed by the candidacy commissions at each stage.
Electoral authorities informed that the process was carried out with transparency and in accordance with the law, and a list of quality and representative proposals was drawn up, which will now be submitted to the consideration of the members of the municipal assemblies.
Cuba will hold general elections next March 26, the first of their kind after the approval of the 2019 Constitution.
