Celac’s support for Argentina’s sovereignty over Malvinas stressed

celac-4-300x169
Buenos Aires, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) The Argentinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday highlighted the support from all 33 member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) for the sovereign right of this country over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands.

In a statement approved during the 7th Celac Summit of Heads of State and Government, the nations expressed their permanent interest that the Governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom resume negotiations to find, as soon as possible, a peaceful and definitive solution to that dispute.

They also stressed the need to respect the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly on the issue.

In this regard, they instructed the pro tempore presidency of CELAC, assumed by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, to request United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to renew the efforts to fulfill the good offices’ mission to resume talks.

They also urged the two States to refrain from making decisions that would entail introducing unilateral modifications to the situation.

The Malvinas (Falkland), South Georgia, South Sandwich islands, and the surrounding maritime areas are subjected to the process recommended by the UN General Assembly.
