Paraguay to assume vice presidency of World Health Organization

Asunción, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan Health Minister Julio Borba was appointed vice president of the Executive Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) and will take office next week, the government announced.

The Minister, elected by the organization to serve for a one-year term, said in his first statements that he will insist on the repayment of the money advanced by the Executive without material response for Covid-19 vaccines amid the pandemic through the WHO Covax Mechanism for this purpose.

I expect to have news next week on the return of more than five million dollars paid by Paraguay to that entity in exchange for vaccines that never arrived, Borba pointed out in statements to ABC Cardinal radio.

I have no further information since December last year, said the Health Minister of Paraguay, one of the most affected countries in the region by the deficit of vaccines and the governmental diversion of resources dedicated to fight the disease, according to local media.

Borba noted that the Government’s idea is to insist on the issue to obtain answers, taking advantage of the fact that the country will have more participation in the WHO.

It will be an extra presence that we will be have as a country from within the organization, he stressed.
