UN High Commissioner for Human Rights arrives in Venezuela

Caracas, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk arrived in Venezuela on Thursday, where he will have an extensive work agenda for three days.

The UN official was welcomed at the international airport of Maiquetía, La Guaira state, by Ruben Molina, deputy minister of Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other authorities.

During his stay in the Bolivarian Republic, Türk will hold talks with government authorities, civil society representatives, human rights defenders, representatives of victims’ groups, heads of UN agencies, funds and programs and diplomats, his office in Geneva informed.

This is the second visit of a High Commissioner for Human Rights to Venezuela, after the one made in 2019 by Michelle Bachelet, and responds to an invitation from President Nicolas Maduro.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Foreign Ministry, the Government reiterated its unwavering commitment to human rights and its willingness to dialogue extensively with the visitor, with the aim of further strengthening the protection and guarantee of the rights of all Venezuelans.

The UN official’s visit, which will last until January 28, will be paid in execution of the mechanisms of constructive dialogue, cooperation and technical assistance existing between Venezuela and the Office under his charge, the press release indicated.
