Ecovalor, an international project financed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), focuses on the search for the conservation of ecosystems and their economic valuation according to the characteristics of the region.
The head of the state forestry service in the municipality of Matanzas, Alejandro Gonzalez, said that among the programs implemented by Ecovalor in the territory, the most important action is the one related to the area located in the Canimar River Valley, where evaluations are done in the 809 hectares of forests on the degradation of the plots.
In order to make the analyses, indicators such as weed invasion, mechanical damage and soil degradation are taken into account, while the carbon retention of the wooded riverbank is measured, actions that are guided by Unidad Empresarial de Base (UEB) Flora y Fauna Matanzas, he said.
Gonzalez explained that one of the goals of the research is to compare the level of progress or decrease in the degradation of the forested areas to determine the level of carbon retention of the region.
