Expectations in Perú for relief to political-social crisis.

Parlamento-Peru
Lima, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) Peru awaits with expectation the tenuous possibility that Congress will unlock the advance of the elections, as a relief to the political-social crisis, urged by a kind of presidential ultimatum and the death of a protester.

In the midst of the wave of popular demonstrations demanding the resigning of President Dina Boluarte, the Parliament will reconsider a project to advance presidential and legislative elections.

The bill formally meets the demand for the president to resign this year and not in 2024 as approved by Congress, and sets the first electoral round for October and the installation of those elected in 2024.

After the first death of a dissenter, on Saturday night in Lima, the president stated that if there is no consensus today in Congress, she will present two initiatives for immediate attention.

It is, as she explained, a reform so that the elections could be held this year and foresees that Congress approves other electoral regulations before February 28 of this year, to leave without effect the one that establishes that the rules are not modified during the year previous to the elections.

According to the left, the measure would meet the requirement of having time to approve electoral reforms at their convenience. Boluarte’s proposal does not meet the demand of the protests and the leftist benches for a referendum on the constituent, an issue that “is used by some political forces to undermine any democratic solution to the current situation.”

A survey by the Institute of Peruvian Studies revealed that 71 percent disapproves Boluarte’s management while 76 percent shared the demand for her to renounce.
