According to a statement from Eskom, as a consequence of the lack of generation, the so-called Stages 5 and 6 are being implemented again today, and until further notice, to compensate for shortages between 5,000 and 6,000 megawatts (MW) of energy per day.
In the last 24 hours, the company explained, six generating units broke down, of which one unit in each at the Duvha and Hendrina power plants have not yet returned to operation.
In addition, there is a delay in returning one generating unit at each of the Kendal, Duvha, Grootvlei and Kriel power stations to the national grid.
Moreover, 4,654 MW are out of service due to scheduled maintenance, while breakdowns currently amount to 18,123 MW of generating capacity.
Last night, the president of South Africa and the African National Congress (ANC), Cyril Ramaphosa, announced that the National Executive Committee of that party reached consensus to declare South Africa’s current energy crisis a national disaster.
