Preservation of culture and heritage promoted in Uganda

Uganda-Anita-Annet-Among-300x225
Kampala, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) The speaker of parliament in Uganda, Anita Annet Among, declared today this legislative body will continue with its efforts to protect the culture and rich heritage of this African country.

In a parliamentary forum on Culture and Gender, the highest representative of the National Assembly also stated that it is necessary to make people aware of the legal provisions that are promulgated in the area of cultural development.

Laws are often made in the Chamber, however, the actors do not apply them, so intense promotional work must be done in this regard with the aim of enlightening the public, she said.

Both Among and other participants in the conclave advocated the need to create, with sufficient funds, a Ministry of Culture, which assumes the activities and issues of the field, currently diluted in the Gender portfolio and other institutions.

The secretary general of the Ugandan National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Rose Agi, expressed, for her part, that the lack of funding “made culture of this country fall behind.”

She acknowledged, however, that Uganda has ratified three international conventions in this area, a strength that contributes to the preservation of national heritage and the promotion of cultural tourism, the media reported.

Delegates present at the forum, such as Barbara Kabwetera, executive director of the Cross Culture Foundation Uganda, also demanded that indigenous knowledge about the history and culture of the nation be included in the educational programs of this territory.

Such action -they agreed- will foster the enhancement on a social scale of the values of ancestral tribes and minority cultures, along with the artistic work of contemporary creators, among other benefits.
