Barbados government boosts cybersecurity against Caribbean attacks

Bridgetown, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) Barbados government is taking today short and long term measures to protect digital data as a result of thousands of cybersecurity attacks throughout the Caribbean. Although many of them are only intended to 'bug the place', it is essential to safeguard systems, the island's Minister of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology, Davidson Ishmael, told the press.

As we move forward in our development as a country and as a national administration, we will continue to improve the ability to protect the various critical assets, the authority stressed.

We have already put in place several systems with various levels of security to protect the government and its infrastructure, he said.

We are trying to coordinate, so that when we implement a protocol, a solution from a cybersecurity point of view or other, we can fully protect all ministries, departments and agencies, Ishmael explained. This Caribbean island, of almost 300,000 inhabitants, is the richest in the Eastern Caribbean, with one of the highest per capita incomes in the Americas.

It must, however, work to have an unwavering IT system in the various ministries, warned experts.
