Through his Twitter account, the Head of State recalled that Hatuey was burned at the stake “for his exemplary resistance to the conquest and evangelization, which turned him into the first leading rebel of our lands”.
In the aforementioned social network, the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba, Roberto Morales, pointed out that the Taino chief is a symbol of rebellion, courage and dignity of Cubans.
Hatuey was burned alive at the stake in Yara, a location in today’s Granma province, in eastern Cuba, as an example to quell the indigenous rebellion.
