Lebanese Maronite League demands to speed up presidential election

Beirut, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) The Executive Council of the Maronite League in Lebanon demanded today to speed up the election of the new president of the Republic, three months after the power void.

After the failure of 11 legislative calls, the Council appealed to the head of Parliament, Nabih Berri, to keep the sessions open until the designation of the next head of state,as stated om am official dispatch.

In this context, the League called on the Supreme Judicial Council to fulfill its duty regarding the restoration of normality in the institution, after the serious contradictions following the return of Judge Tariq Al-Bitar to the file of the Beirut port explosion on August 4, 2020.

The statement assured support for the Lebanese Army and all security agencies in the tasks they carry out to maintain stability on national soil.

The statement affirmed its back up for the ongoing investigations into corruption issues related to some official departments and institutions in the country.

According to the national pact of independence from France in 1943 and the confessional system, the office of president of the Lebanese Republic is held by a representative of the Maronite Christian community.

Michel Aoun ended his term of office last October 31 and Lebanon is trying to appoint its 14th post-independence president in the absence of political consensus, a worsening economic crisis and under an interim government with limited constitutional powers.
