Last year, 382 murders were committed, 82 more than at the end of 2021. According to the newspaper La Diaria, the increase in violent deaths has been sustained since the last quarter of 2021.

January of this year was no exception, with 37 homicides, 19% more than in the same period of 2022.

In the first month of the current year, 31 of the 37 persons murdered, were men, while in six cases the victims were women. Sixty-two percent of these crimes occurred in Montevideo with 23 homicides, most of them committed with firearms.
