Cuba readies conditions to measure impact of Mayarí wildfire

Havana, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma, in Spanish) reported that conditions are being prepared to measure the impact of a wildfire that today affects the Mayari Agroforestry Enterprise in the island's east.

Forest Ranger Corps, Mayari Agroforestry Enterprise, Holguin Firefighters have taken the necessary measures to put out the raging flames.

Citma specialists prepare conditions to assess impacts and possible environmental damages, the Ministry reported on Twitter.

At this moment, according to Ahora provincial newspaper, joint forces of the Forest Ranger Corps and the Mayari Agroforestry Company are fighting the large-scale wildfire, which has severely damaged the mountain area of El Prado.

The abundance of organic plant material and the impact of the drought favor the advance of the flames, which have already devoured more than 1,000 hectares of forest.

According to official estimates from Cuba’s Forest Ranger Corps, between 320 and 445 forest fires are expected for 2023, which could damage between 4,300 and 6,000 hectares from January to May.

Cuba has a National System of Protection against Forest Fires, which has a National Strategy and Program for Fire Management and Management in forests for the period 2018-2025.
