NATO on the warpath in Ukraine

NATO on the warpath in Ukraine

By: Antonio Rondón*
The decision by Germany of supplying Ukraine with Leopard-2 tanks or allowing others to do so had a domino effect, with insinuations of sending fighter planes to that country, when the danger of an internationalization of the conflict with Russia increases.

In the mid of pressures of the United States on Berlin to contribute to Ukraine´s rearming, contradictions among the German government appear, with militaristic statements by its Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock: “we are at war with Russia”, she said.

As a fact, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, once at his time member of the left wing of the Social Democratic Youth, denied that his country ever intends to send combat planes to Ukraine.

The conflict at the former Soviet republic, from where since February 24 last year, Russia launched a war operation to demilitarize and denazify it, increases the possibilities of going beyond its borders and involving national European armies, Voenoe Obozrenie affirms.

Several European countries, among them Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Spain and Latvia, will totally contribute with around one hundred Leopard-2 tanks, while the Chairman of the State Duma (Russia´s lower house), Viacheslav Volodin, warns that this could lead to a global catastrophe.

Washington already implied that the answer should never be by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which would relieve it of fulfilling with article 5 from that bloc which foresees group defense, to leave the almost suicidal task to Europe of doing it alone.

However, specialists talk about dividends foreseen for the US military industry, which could take care of filling up the European weapons warehouses, highly mitigated by the shipments done to Ukraine since February 2022.

The task is becoming clearer and publicly recognized of destroying, or better said, erasing Russia in all its spheres; seems to increase even more the blindness of the West, especially in Europe, after they understood the failure for it of the economic war.

Europe was left without one of its ingredients for its competitiveness: cheap energy from Russia, after succumbing to calls and pressures from the White House to stop buying it in order to fall into a spiral of price hikes, inflation and social explosions.

Now it seems to go to a second stage of a certain sociopolitical collective suicide: it increases the dangers of finding itself directly involved in Ukraine’s war.
