Alert on the rise of violence in Panama

Panama City, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina ) Panamanian authorities warned about the boom in violence by reporting 57 homicides so far this year, 27 more than in the same days of 2022.

According to the report of the Ministry of Security (Minseg), this figure represents an increase of 190% of murders related to organized crime and with greater incidence in the capital district of San Miguelito and the provinces of Panama and Colon.

Analysts also estimated that the violence is disrupting public order and causing a perception of insecurity.

The head of Minseg, Juan Manuel Pino, told the press that what is happening in San Miguelito is associated with drug trafficking, which awakens old quarrels and promotes fights between criminal groups for the control of territories.

.

So far, that ministry deployed more than 300 members of the National Police, the National Air and Naval Service and the National Border Service in the capital district as part of the operational actions to dismantle organized gang groups.

Criminologist Marco Aurelio Álvarez explained to La Estrella de Panamá newspaper that violence, as a way of living, is caused by the lack of respect for human dignity.

In his opinion, the homicides indicate that the firearms that should be guarded by security agencies are in the hands of common people and criminal gangs.

Secondly, he said, statistics show that homicide deaths – a violent mechanism – are increasing in the country because more and more entire families are making a living from crime.

In this regard, sociologist Gilberto Toro also commented that in the current situation, we could be facing an abandonment of values and a poor labor supply, which competes with a productive criminal supply. jrr/arm/mem/ga.
