FMLN will seek unity candidacy for 2024

San Salvador, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) party will seek a unity candidacy for the February 2024 elections, leaders of that political grouping affirmed.

In recent declarations to Prensa Latina, José Luis Merino, one of the historical leaders of the organization valued the possibility of reaching a candidacy for 2024, by means of combining experience and youth.

We are in that discussion, we have exchanges with the comrades and I do not lose hope that we can agree with a person who is able to carry our dreams of fighters for democracy and to improve the conditions of the people’, he said.

Merino regretted that within the organization there are ‘cancerous cells struggling to transform the FMLN into a puppet of the empire’, trying to fix the idea that we can only move forward in association with the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) party.

We are going to make it clear in the coming weeks that men and women want to continue embracing our cause and we are going to return to our popular roots, he assured.

In this regard, Jaime Guevara, congressman and member of the Political Commission of the red party is the one who considers that the party is an option for the elections of 2024, mainly for being a leftist project, something that contradicts the opinions of analysts who consider the reelection of the current president Nayib Bukele as a certainty.

He specified that officially they still do not have pre-candidates for the presidency, deputies or municipal councils, since they are currently in the stage of updating the party’s electoral roll.

During an interview with TVX, the legislator pointed out that his party will present its candidates as established by the Constitution of the Republic in the face of ‘a possible candidate who is trampling on the Constitution’, in reference to the prohibition of immediate presidential reelection.

In this return to the bases that made the red party the largest leftist organization in the country and the one that historically did more for the people, and in this recomposition that the Front is making, Guevara underlined, and quote: ‘we are going to continue taking the sleep away from right-wing guys like Bukele, from his party’.

According to party sources, the FMLN plans to elect its candidates in April and May to demonstrate that it is ‘an option, we are going to present our comrades, our best allies to the Salvadoran population, the people are looking for leaders’, he stressed.
