Three million people in India threatened by glacial lakes

New Delhi, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) Three million Indians are at risk of flooding caused by glacial lakes, the largest number of people in the world exposed to this phenomenon, according to new research released here today.

The study by an international team led by scientists from the UK’s Newcastle University is the first global assessment of the areas at highest risk of glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF).

An estimated 15 million people around the world are at risk from glacial lake outburst floods, according to the paper, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

The researchers say that more than half of the exposed populations around the globe are found in just four nations: India, Pakistan, Peru and China.

India and Pakistan have the largest number of compromised people, with nearly three million and two million people, respectively, which together account for one-third of the global total.
