Panamanian youths highlight legacy of General Omar Torrijos

Panama, Feb 13 (Prensa Latina) Young Panamanians ratified their will to continue the ideology of General Omar Torrijos (1929-1981), who would be celebrating his 94th birthday on Monday.

Commemorating the date, Monica Sierera, an activist and a member of the Omar Torrijos Foundation, stated that it is the new Panamanian generations’ commitment to advocating for the values that he instilled, and promoting the country’s inclusive development.

During a cultural event to recall the military officer and head of State until he was killed in a helicopter crash in August 1981, his son and former president between 2004 and 2009, Martin Torrijos, said that young people who did not know Omar see in his legacy a reference to make the necessary changes.

The National Meeting “Torrijos’ Balances and Challenges in the 21st Century” was also held at the headquarters of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament on Sunday.

At the forum, participants on behalf of several civil society organizations, politicians, academics, and indigenous authorities, signed the so-called “Vision 50” project.
