Brasilia, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva promised today to resume growth in Brazil with the return of some 14,000 infrastructure works paralyzed during the last six years throughout the national territory.

The country will return to normality and the “giant wheel of the economy” will work again, generating new jobs, income and economic growth, said the founder of the Workers’ Party during his visit to the town of Maruim, in the small state of Sergipe (northeast).

He also criticized defeated President Jair Bolsonaro and vowed to do more than the former army captain in the next four years.

“We are going to do many times more than the thing (Bolsonaro) that came out now and did not even have the courage to put the presidential sash on me,” he said.

He insisted that the ex-soldier left the country before, since December he has been in the United States, “out of fear, because he knew that we were going to work and make this country not a country of lies, but a country of work,” he stressed. .

Lula came to Maruim and visited the construction site on a road, where he greeted the workers.

On the occasion, he signed the restart of the duplication works of the 206-kilometer section of the BR-101 highway in Sergipe, with the commitment of about 180 million reais (34.4 million dollars).

This reactivation will be done in the transportation area, with tasks that were paralyzed or at a slow pace.

The ministry of this sector foresees more than 22 billion reais (a little more than four billion 246 million dollars) in investments, only in 2023, in streets or road infrastructure.

According to the portfolio, in Bolsonaro’s four years, 20 billion reais (about three billion 853 million) were invested.

“We have more than 100 highway maintenance, implementation and duplication works that have been retaken or intensified,” Transport Minister Renan Filho told the daily Metropoles.

Lula visits Sergipe one day after participating, in the state of Bahia (northeast), in the relaunch ceremony of My House, My Life, a program to deliver homes to needy families.

The president attended the donation of 684 homes in the Bahian municipality of Santo Amaro, but there were also other simultaneous ones for the housing plan in Lauro de Freitas (Bahia), João Pessoa (Paraíba), Contagem (Minas Gerais) and Aparecida de Goiânia ( Goiás).

In the Bolsonaro government, the project was replaced by the Green and Yellow House, with other criteria.

My House, My Life was created in 2009 during Lula’s second term, with the aim of reducing the housing deficit in the country.

At least 281,472 Brazilians currently live without a roof (homeless) in the South American giant, a figure that represents an increase of 38 percent compared to 2019, the pre-pandemic period of Covid-19.
