El Salvador on alert due to forest fires

San Salvador, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador authorities issued today an alert due to the threat of wildfires that have affected the country in recent weeks.

Civil Protection, one of the agencies most involved in cases of disasters, issued the first level of preventive alert at national level, the green one, because due to the increase of winds affecting the country this week, several forest fires could increase, according to specialists.

The latest meteorological reports indicate that winds of between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour may occur, with the probability of tumbling trees and billboards, as well as increasing fires thus making harder extinguishing work.

In mountainous areas and in this capital city, strong gusts of wind are registered, while authorities warn the population to avoid activities and actions that could trigger new fires.

Likewise, the authorities alerted maritime and air navigation, artisanal and sport fishing, to evaluate the atmospheric and oceanographic conditions before carrying out their activities.
