Nearly 600 deaths in Haiti as a result of cholera

Port-au-Prince, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Haitian health authorities registered up to 594 deaths from cholera and 32,141 suspected cases almost five months after the outbreak of the disease.

According to a balance of the Ministry of Health and Population, two thousand confirmed cases, 22,469 suspects and more than 28,300 were hospitalized all over the country.

Cholera is a bacterial disease associated with contaminated food or water that causes acute watery diarrhea and vomiting, capable of causing dehydration, hence early detection is essential to control it.

However, it reappeared three years after the last registered case, in the midst of a serious social, political, economic and security crisis that limited the access of thousands of citizens to medical assistance.

In addition, the highest number of cases has been reported in the capital and surrounding cities that are under the influence of armed gangs.

Almost five months later, the authorities are still to report the origin of the outbreak, although they began a vaccination campaign to limit its spread.

In 2010, after the earthquake in Haiti, more than 10,000 people died from cholera epidemic and another 820,000 fell ill, according to official data, although social and political organizations estimate that the number may be even higher.
