Bolivia moves forward with bioceanic integration project

La Paz, Feb 24 (Prensa Latina) The coordinator of the Technical Unit of Railways, Augusto Chassagnez, confirmed the progress of the integration program that will join the Pacific and Atlantic oceans from Brazilian to Peruvian ports, passing through Bolivian territory.

We are on the eve of creating the Freight Clearing House, to make it work, making it easier for those who use the corridor to use the system and eliminate all the bureaucracy’, the official said.

Chassagnez added that the project foresees the completion of a single procedure at origin or destination and the importer and exporter will go to define where they will pay their tariffs.

He explained in an interview to Bolivia Tv channel that the country that receives the resources will be in charge of transmitting the amounts, either operational or maintenance fees, to the other nations through which the cargo will pass.

With an investment of 18 million bolivianos (more than two million 500 thousand dollars), the pre-investment technical design studies for the Bulo Bulo-Puerto Villarroel and Ivirgarzama-Villa Tunari railroad sections, called I and II, which are part of the Bioceanic Railroad Corridor.

These segments will unite and consolidate the project on the Bolivian side.

Chassagnez indicated that the studies should be concluded before the end of the year, to then begin with the financing and construction of the missing sections.

Bolivia was chosen to coordinate the regional integration project, which was taken up by the government of President Luis Arce after the reestablishment of democracy.

After the coup d’état of November 2019 and the imposition of the de facto government of Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) this project was shelved.

On the Brazilian side there is significant progress and the resolution of the political crisis in Peru is expected to move forward, it was reported.

According to official data, the Bioceanic Integration Railway Corridor will reduce costs and time in international cargo transportation, since Bolivia will have direct access to ports on the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through this corridor.

In July 2022, the Minister of Public Works, Services and Housing, Édgar Montaño, informed that the national government will invest more than three billion 200 million bolivianos (about 457 million dollars) until 2025 for the construction of this railway.
