Is Ecuador’s opposition agenda destabilizing?

Ecuador-Conaie-500x333
Quito, Feb 27 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso lashed out against those who intend to violate the country's institutional framework, although many disagree about that point of view on destabilization.

After the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) announced the rupture of negotiations with the administration after the June 2022 strike, and requested the president’s resignation, the chief executive and his minister of government rejected such an attitude.

They described as antidemocratic the CONAIE’s call for his resignation or, failing that, to open an impeachment process at the National Assembly (Parliament) to speed up an end of his term due to his “incapacity” to rule.

Not only the CONAIE has made such calls in the last few days, but also the Popular Front, which groups union and students organizations. The National Union of Educators (UNE) calls for Lasso’s departure from the Carondelet Palace.

Given the scenario of social abandonment and accusations against his government for alleged corruption in public companies and links with drug trafficking, civil groups are calling for mobilizations and sit-ins, particularly on March 8, International Women’s Day
