Paraguay: 20 percent of indigenous children suffer from malnutrition

Asuncion, Feb 27 (Prensa Latina) Some 20 percent of Paraguay's indigenous children are malnourished, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), the UltimaHora newspaper published on Monday.

The indicator for the total child population is almost 15 percent with chronic malnutrition, UNICEF director of Nutrition and Child Development Victor Aguayo said during a visit to the country, the daily added.

We still have this situation among the indigenous communities of the Guarani nation and it is likely that in some of them the rate is higher, the Unicef leader futher said, although he described the available Paraguayan data as ‘old’.

We have to know, as soon as possible, how our children are growing and what support, programs and policies, including those of Unicef, we have to improve so that this response is increasingly effective,’ recommended Aguayo, who contacted local authorities and toured some regions.
