Haitian prosecutor asks to investigate alleged corruption case

Port-au-Prince, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Haitian prosecutor Jacques Lafontant asked the Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate an advisor of the Superior Council of the Judiciary on whom accusations of bribery weigh, according to a document circulating in social media.

The head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of this capital considered it necessary to investigate ‘the persistent and proven allegations’ made by third parties, in particular by the Justice of the Peace of Jacmel, Merlin Toussaint, as well as magistrate Maximin Pierre.

The accusations concern a fictitious company called Dépôt Store and Ideal Multi Services, as well as influence peddling exercised on the correctional judge to obtain the release of Joel Khawly, in exchange for an amount of $120,000, according to a letter sent to the Anti-Corruption Unit.

Lafontant, who along with some 30 judges and government commissioners did not receive the approval of the Technical Certification Commission for alleged acts of corruption, has maintained since the end of January a war against some high officials of the judiciary.

In fact, he refused to comply with the ordinance of the Superior Council which decreed the prohibition to practice to those not certified and gave a deadline of eight days to recover the materials and other equipment, while threatening to request police support.
