Council chamber extends pre-trial detention for former EP member

Eva-Kailli
Brussels, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) The Brussels Council Chamber decided Friday to extend the pre-trial detention for former European Parliament (EP) Vice-President Eva Kaili by two more months, the Belgian Public Prosecutor's Office reported.

Kaili is accused of alleged involvement in bribery paid by Qatar and Morocco to MEPs and other influential EP people to gain political and financial clout in the community sphere.

However, the former EP vice-president’s defense maintains that the accused is innocent of all charges against her and requests immediate release.

Meanwhile, Kaili remains under arrest after her detention in December 2021 when the alleged corrupt network was uncovered.

The court also decided to extend the pre-trial detention for Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella by a month. He and Kaili appeared before the judge on Tuesday.

Both are charged with corruption, money laundering, and participation in a criminal organization.
