Dominican Police reinforces measures against sonic pollution

Santo Domingo, Mar 7 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Police created a Specialized Anti-Noise Directorate to confront noise pollution cases that really affect population.

According to the General Directorate of the National Police, the new entity will replace the department that has been operating until a few months ago and will try to prevent environmental deterioration factors, imposing the corresponding sanctions for damages caused to both people and environment.

In this nation, complaints about different types of noise are increasing and the Public Prosecutor’s Office is not enough to deal with it.

The Environmental Prosecutor Francisco Contreras told the press that noise pollution is present in all social levels and there are only 44 people in charge of facing this scourge.

Contreras indicated that the permitted decibels are established by hours of the day and places, ranging from 55 to 65, although in areas close to hospitals, schools, nursing homes and residential areas, they are much lower.

WHO determined that noise pollution above allowed decibels causes serious issues in the nervous, auditory and cardiovascular systems, sleep disorders, depression and aggressiveness, which in many cases cause deaths.

For violators of the Environmental Law regarding noise, the Dominican Republic has established penalties ranging from one to three years of imprisonment.
