Uruguay’s FA calls on government for Astesiano case

Alejandro-Astesiano
Montevideo, Mar 7 (Prensa Latina) The case of former presidential security chief Alejandro Astesiano is currently the major corruption scheme in Uruguay since the dictatorship ended, Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA) stated.

Such is a statement of its Working Group released in this capital on Tuesday that responded to an audio by Gabriela Fossati, prosecutor of the investigation, who said that the Astesiano case would never end due to obstacles and “stones” from State institutions.

The case involves pursuing senators, monitoring high school students, influencing peddling, using security devices for private purposes, and falsifying documentation to allow the issuing of passports, among other crimes, the document stresses.

It underlines that Astesiano was indicted for corruption and for being part of an association to commit crimes that operated from the Executive Tower, headquarters of the presidential office.

Through an agreement between Fossati and the defense team, Astesiano was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in an abbreviated trial. jrr/iff/lam/ool
